Stunt is past its Selby date

The lovely and much-missed comedian Linda Smith once told of how, in her town of Erith, there was a competition to name the new leisure centre.

The winner was the person who suggested it should be called The Erith Leisure Centre.

But this week a local paper in Selby announced, “The winner of the competition to name the new leisure centre in Selby is Steve Wadsworth.

He’s won three years of free membership for his suggestion, ‘The Selby Leisure Centre’.”

Erith and Selby should twin with each other, and launch a competition to name their new alliance, which will

be won by whoever writes, “Erith and Selby”.
