Monumental mistake over 1646 battle
THE true location of a civil war battlefield has been revealed – a mile from where historians previously believed it to be.
The 1646 clash – that saw the Roundheads surrender to the Cavaliers – was thought to have happened on a ridge near Stow-on-the-Wold, Glos.
And locals put up a stone monument to mark the spot in 2002.
But a new survey by the Battlefields Trust has uncovered 17th century musket balls in fields much closer to the town.
The Trust’s Simon Marsh, who has excavated the area four times, said: “All the evidence suggests the battle took place at a different location about a mile away.” Experts now plan to do more research to confirm the theory.
