Uber is given green light as fares rocket

- BY AINE FOX

UBER has finally won the backing of London transport chiefs – after a fourand-a-half year battle.

The victory comes two weeks after the firm imposed sharp fare rises across the country over a ruling it must charge VAT.

Uber was denied a licence by Transport for London in 2017 because of fears over standards.

But judges set aside the concerns, declaring the firm “fit and proper”.

TfL said yesterday: “Uber has been granted a London licence for twoand-a-half years.”

Yaseen Aslam, of the App Drivers and Couriers Union, warned the move will lead to “more poverty”.

He claims Uber refuses to pay drivers for waiting time “which is about 50% of working time”.
