Howe about ‘a Southgate’

-

EDDIE HOWE listed the activities the Newcastle players have embarked on at their Dubai training camp this week.

“The boys have used the altitude chamber, which they enjoyed, swimming pool, hyperbaric chambers, cryotherapy chambers. We’ve used everything to help them physically.”

This may seem standard, but it is a small taster of the new investment – new players, physical conditioning and mentality – that Howe is getting to inject into his squad.

Flying the Toon squad to Dubai’s Nad Al Sheba training complex, giving them two days in the sun to unwind, then preparing for next Sunday’s game with Spurs shows Howe will get everything he needs in the next couple of years to relaunch Newcastle.

Howe is leading the team with an emphasis on thought, detail and

cleverness. His style, it appears, is akin to that of Gareth Southgate’s approach to the England job – a modern manager of Generation Z players, who demand emotional intelligence, calm instructions and self-improvement.

There is also a strong emphasis on the collective, bringing his group tighter.

Howe has the potential to lead Newcastle for many years.

He will have to grow on the job.

Can he tap a new market of elite players in the transfer market? Can he bond together a series of big new signings into the team ethos he has created?

The answer will be yes.

Because he’s smart and because he now has a core of players – Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Jamaal Lascelles and co, who will keep the squad grounded.
