He’s a cat in a 1,000

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

Moggy Hugo is feline grand today. He’s just become the 1,000th stray cat to find new owners thanks to the efforts of one of the country’s most successful RSPCA rehoming centres. The 11-year-old puss was found underweight and badly injured last November, needing an eye op and dental treatment.

But on Tuesday, in an event to celebrate the rehoming milestone for the RSPCA Cat Hub in Darlington, Co Durham, he was handed over to local couple Jean and Andrew Pegg – watched by TV’s Yorkshire Vet Julian Norton. Jean has fostered 90 strays since 2008. She said she knew it would be hard for the hub – set up four years ago to rescue strays –to find him a home “so we decided to keep him”. Julian said: “I have treated many rescue cats and it is great to see the RSPCA doing such a great job.”

Local RSPCA inspector Mark Gent added: “Up to 30 cats and kittens are available for rehoming at the Cat Hub at any one time. We are grateful for any support the public gives us.”
