Power ’n the glory
SEAMUS POWER and Rory McIlroy’s golf careers had a ‘sliding doors’ moment.
As a youngster, McIlroy turned down a golfing scholarship from East Tennessee State University – Irishman Power, now 35, took his place instead.
He went on to graduate in accountancy and now the Waterford man has risen from outside the world’s top 500 to a career-high 41st in just two years.
Old college pal and fellow pro, Gareth Shaw, reckons Power has got Augusta’s number, too.
Shaw said: “Rory obviously made the right choice and that opened the door for Seamus.
“He’s a smart guy, with a great caddie as well. He knows so much about Augusta himself already.
“I would back Seamus all day long to make the cut.
“Could he make the top 10 or better? I absolutely don’t think that would faze him – he’s got the mindset to handle it and he’s coming off strong form.”
