john cross in Qatar USA coach Gregg Berhalter revealed how Gareth Southgate helped him revive his team’s fortunes – but now he will be out to beat his pal.

Berhalter (right) got in touch with Southgate after taking the USA job three years ago, because he so admired the way that the England coach worked.

The Americans were at a low point – similar to when Southgate took over England after the Euros shambles.

Berhalter said: “I have known Gareth since 2019 when I took over the job. We have maintained contact and bounced ideas off each other.

“It is a strong relationship. I reached out to Gareth because of the similarities.

“I knew I was taking over a young team and I saw what he had done. Gareth changed the culture. It was a bit like us after not qualifying in 2018.”

Reminded that the USA have never lost to England in a World Cup finals – causing a huge upset in 1950 and getting a 1-1 draw in 2010 after a Rob Green blooper – Berhalter laughed: “You’re just adding to the pressure!

“I mean, how many times have we actually played?”
