HAT’S A BIG ONE Hatters grab vital late point

- By JON WEST at Kenilworth Road

NATHAN JONES is convinced Luton’s late own goal leveller could prove crucial.

The Hatters remain fourth and on course for the play-offs after twice coming from behind.

Elijah Adebayo cancelled out Tom Bradshaw’s opener and Lions skipper Jake Cooper put through his own goal after Benik Afobe had pounced at the other end.

Hatters manager Jones said: “It was a good point in the end. If we get to a points tally we achieve our goal.

“Coming back twice after going behind showed we have great character.

“It was important we didn’t lose. It keeps us going with one game down and seven to go.”

Bradshaw fired Millwall, who remain on the fringe of the play-offs, into a 25th-minute lead.

Jed Wallace set up the striker outside the box for a thumping first-time drive that eluded goalkeeper James Shea.

Luton were level eight minutes later however thanks to a superb passing move and finish.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu looked in trouble in the middle of the pitch but Henri Lansbury’s backheel allowed Bell to play a onetwo with Adebayo.

The big frontman had been given brutal treatment from Millwall defenders and took revenge with a low finish across goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski and in off the post.

Bialkowski denied Harry Cornick early in the second period and Lansbury had to make a last ditch intervention at the other end to stop Bradshaw nabbing another however.

Then Scott Malone was only just off target from the edge of the box after Luton half cleared a corner.

Luton were caught out in the 81st minute when substitute Oliver Burke was sent clear down the left by Wallace.

The Scot crossed the ball for the onrushing Afobe to volley home.

Luton sent on Robert Snodgrass and Cameron Jerome and were back level with three minutes remaining.

It was credited as a Cooper own goal after the Lions skipper went up with Adebayo at the back post and headed Snodgrass’s free-kick past his own keeper.

Lions manager Gary Rowett said: “It is disappointing to have worked so hard to get into that position, but I’m not saying we threw it away because that would be unfair on Luton.”
