Call to scupper PM’s yacht plan and sink £250m into the police
LABOUR is demanding Boris Johnson scraps plans for a £250million yacht and spends it on policing.
The vessel – which will replace the Royal Yacht Britannia and will be used to host diplomatic meetings when the PM is abroad– has been branded his biggest vanity project.
Now Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says the cash should be used to fund a nationwide network of police hubs to combat community crime.
She said: “We need to see police back on our streets, working in communities to keep people safe.”
A Labour source added: “The
Royal Family do not want a new yacht and it would bring no advantage to the Navy. The money saved could fund police hubs in hundreds of local neighbourhoods.”
Ms Cooper will unveil her plan on TV today as figures reveal only one in three people have confidence in the Tories to cut crime.
Analysis shows the number who say they never see a police officer has jumped from 25% to 48% since the Tories came to power in 2010.
