Skindeep concerns
As the founder of a skincare brand, I go to great lengths to make sure that what my customers buy is safe.
For that reason, I make a real effort to get my products certified as organic.
It gives people peace of mind to know what they put on their skin does not contain genetically modified ingredients, synthetic colours or fragrances and other controversial chemicals and materials.
But not all companies adhere to these standards, as discovered by Plastic Soup Foundation.
The nonprofit group,
which campaigns against plastic pollution found products, including shampoo, lipstick, deodorant and moisturiser, from leading brands such as Garnier, Nivea, Gillette and Head & Shoulders, contains microplastic particles.
And these could pose a risk not only to the environment, but to human health too. Microplastics have been found in people’s lungs, which is very disturbing.
The foundation is calling for “stricter rules on the use of synthetic polymers”. It’s time these ingredients are banned so that firms have to find safer ones for us and the world we live in.
