FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST FOR LEGEND LANGER

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

BERNHARD LANGER missed the cut at The Masters, despite missing only one fairway in his two rounds – and that by only a foot.

The German – the oldest player in the field at 64 – hit a remarkable 27 out of 28 fairways in his 39th appearance at Augusta National.

His tee shot at the Par 4 seventh hole on Friday settled just 12 inches into the semi-rough.

But the two-time champion – who won here in 1985 and 1993 – could still only card two rounds of 76.

The Ryder Cup legend admitted: “I was satisfied with how I played and I don’t think my score reflected that.

“I hit the ball very well, but my short game wasn’t good enough.

“I am not long enough at this level, so you cannot afford to miss chips and putts – you have to be better.”

However, the German signed off: “But I will be back next year.”

Langer was playing his first Masters since the death of his long-time coach Willi Hofman in January.

He admitted: “I thought about him a lot during the rounds.”
