Masks force stinky garlic off the menu
GARLIC is being banished from New York restaurants because of face masks.
Top chefs are leaving the ingredient out of their dishes so diners can avoid inhaling its pungent aroma after they eat.
Thomas Makkos, owner of Nello, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, said: “I made the decision to get rid of it altogether and my customers thanked me.
“Imagine eating a meal with garlic and putting your mask on. You’re breathing your own bad breath.”
Some top diners, including Fasano and at Osteria 57, are also leaving it off their menus. But others are vowing to keep it. Ali Tisi, proprietor of Il Piccolo Bufalo in Little Italy, said: “It’s very difficult to substitute. It’s not going to happen.”
