Star Neils at altar of pop

-

Not many people can say they have gone from Pope to pop, but Neil Tennant certainly can.

The Pet Shop Boys singer reveals that before he topped the charts, he wanted to be the head of the Catholic Church. As you do.

Speaking on Radio 4’s This Cultural Life, Neil, 67, says:

“My first ambition was, I wanted to be a priest. Really, I wanted to be the Pope. I liked the dressing up.

“Our parish priest was an army chaplain and had robes he had made in the Far East. I spent hours looking at them.

“When you are an altar boy, you come out with the candles and the audience stand up.

“I lost interest in it all, but the incense, the imagery and the robes… I loved it.”

It’s a sin, indeed.
