A bloody good dog
Cora the labradoodle donated a unit of blood and saved another dog’s life right away. Bridget, a 10-year-old shorkie, was in an adjacent room and needed an urgent transfusion after suffering a bleeding ulcer.
A quick check at Ellesmere Port’s Animal Trust Vets, in Cheshire, found Cora’s blood compatible.
A Pet Blood Bank spokesman said: “Cora was the lifesaving donor who had just donated a unit of blood, which the practice took to use for Bridget’s transfusion.”
Within hours, Bridget – a shih tzu-Yorkshire terrier cross – was “brighter” and able to go back home. Owner Martyn Rodgers said his gratitude was “immeasurable” and urged more owners to bring their dogs to give blood.
Cora’s owner, Julie Willey, said helping other animals in need “fills us with pride”.
Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the only charity providing a blood bank service for all vets. Healthy dogs aged one to eight can be donors, depending on temperament and breed type.
