WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT... financial anxiety?
Research by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy shows 40 per cent of adults feel anxious about money, with 16 per cent losing sleep over it.
“Don’t avoid post, emails or calls related to your debt or bills,” advises Simon Coombs, a BACP counsellor.
“Take back control by sitting down and writing a list of your income and outgoings. Without this you can incite catastrophic thinking which affects your sleep, mood, raises anxiety and creates depression.”
Learn about the options you have for help.
“Distinguish who is likely to want to help you – for instance utility companies, the council and your bank could arrange payment plans. Establish a manageable repayment plan as taking positive steps will help reduce depression and anxiety.”
Being honest with your partner, friends, family and colleagues can help relieve stress.
“Asking for help is not a weakness, it’s a strength because you are taking back control,” Simon adds.
