MAX: GET STREETWISE

MAX VERSTAPPEN has issued a double warning to F1 bosses – that the Grand Prix calendar is overloaded and that street circuits are not the way forward.

The Dutch driver has made a plea to F1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali to focus his efforts more on drivers than the venues.

There is a strong feeling among Verstappen and his peers that 23 races per season is already too much.

With additional venues to be added in Las Vegas and a base in Africa under discussion, there are fears the season could stretch to up to 30 events.

Verstappen said: “I’ve discussed issues with Stefano. Of course, they have to make money and try to make the sport more popular but it’s also important that the right tracks stay on the calendar and we don’t just drive on street circuits.

“These cars are not made for that. Stefano understands but has shareholders he has to take into account.”

Red Bull principal Christian Horner said: “Twenty three races is already a lot. Quality has to be more important than quantity. We will have to look at certain circuits, whether they can stay on the calendar.”
