TIGERS ROAR INTO THE LAST EIGHT

Champions Cup round-up

LEICESTER booked their quarter-final spot with victory over CLERMONT AUVERGNE last night.

The Tigers will host Irish province Leinster after a 27-17 win at Welford Road.

Boasting a 19-point advantage heading into the second leg, the hard work had already been done against their French opponents.

But it was job complete for the Premiership leaders, who won 56-27 on aggregate to seal their first last-eight spot in the competition since 2016.

The Tigers ran in four tries with Freddie Steward’s late score the pick of the bunch.

EXETER were undone by Joey Carbery’s inspired display as MUNSTER overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the quarter-finals.

The Irish province won 26-10 to seal a 34-23 victory on aggregate yesterday. And although

Sam Maunder scored the first try for 2020 champions Exeter, who led by five points after the first leg, man-of-the-match Carbery then crossed to hand Munster the lead.

Jacques Vermeulen powered over after the break but Carbery’s boot edged the Irish side in front on aggregate. South Africa centre Damian de Allende sealed it late on.

Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter said: “There is a reality – we weren’t where we needed to be to win that game. We just weren’t confrontational or competitive enough in many areas.”
