Toon test Arsenal in Dom race

- TOM HOPKINSON

NEWCASTLE are planning to rival Arsenal this summer in the battle for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Both clubs have made enquiries about the England international, who is likely to leave Goodison Park whether the Toffees stay up or not.

Calvert-Lewin, 25, is a saleable asset and, despite a frustrating season blighted by injuries, is still regarded as one of the best forwards in the country.

His sale would help Everton financially after they lost Russian backer Alisher Usmanov in the last few weeks.

Arsenal are scouring the globe for forwards, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both out of contract in the summer.

Lacazette’s departure would leave the Gunners without a recognised central striker and boss Mikel Arteta is a big fan of Calvert-Lewin.

Newcastle are also keen to bolster their attacking options and are confident a bumper deal, and their ambitious project, could lure the Everton man to the North East.
