U’s shock limp Latics

WIGAN’S promotion push suffered a surprise setback against Cambridge.

Harvey Knibbs and Sam Smith did the damage as the U’s made the lacklustre Latics look anything but league leaders.

Tom Naylor pulled a late goal back to set up a tense finish – but Wigan were left with what they deserved.

Mid-table Cambridge started brightly as Lloyd Jones and George Williams went close with early headers.

And they hit the front when Knibbs drilled home from the edge of the box on 33 minutes. Ben Amos had to be at his best to keep out Adam May as the visitors kept up the pressure.

But there was nothing he could do to stop Smith (above) doubling Cambridge’s lead two minutes before the break.

Knibbs missed a sitter to extend the visitors’ lead before Callum Lang wasted a decent chance on the hour.

Naylor nodded home from close range with 12 minutes to go to give Wigan hope.

But after the Latics’ Tom Pearce sliced over, United keeper Dimitar Mitov kept the points safe by stopping Josh Magennis’ header deep into added time.
