Smart meter charged me £40k a day!

- BY

A MAN unplugged his smart meter and shut it in a cupboard after it claimed he had used £40,000 of electricity in just one day.

Big Five supplier EDF assured Paul Davies, 46, its meters were “never wrong” and tried to up his direct debit to £400 a month.

They saw sense when he protested, blaming a “software issue”. But the meter did not change, so Paul, of Scunthorpe, Lincs, decided to turn it off, shut it away and take his own readings.

“How the hell does one person use £40,000 worth of electric in one day?” he asked. “It was as if my meter was paying for the whole street

“It was only because I kept talking to them that I got the problem sorted.”

Supplier EDF has been contacted for comment.
