Treemendous tribute

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

HE talks to plants and hugs trees – so it was fitting the Prince of Wales unveiled a nationwide network of 70 ancient woodlands and 70 trees to be dedicated to his mother for her Platinum Jubilee yesterday.

Prince Charles posed under one of the trees, the Old Sycamore which is more than 350 years old, at Scottish stately home Dumfries House to launch her Green Canopy initiative which has already seen more than a million trees planted.

Meanwhile, primary school children will be given a book as a keepsake to mark her 70-year reign. Created with the help of royal experts and historians, Queen Elizabeth: A Platinum Jubilee Celebration will allow children to trace the highlights of her reign through a story featuring a girl called Isabella.

It will contain famous quotes from the Queen – along with details of famous Commonwealth figures such as Nelson Mandela. The book will be handed out to children in state-funded primary schools, said the Department of Education.
