Covid fines: MPs push for new appeals
LABOUR MPs want a new appeals system for Covid fines in the wake of Boris Johnson’s No10 parties.
Police dished out 100,000 fixed penalty notices in lockdown.
Rupa Huq, of the Commons Justice Committee, and Labour colleague Dawn Butler are calling for an appeals mechanism for those wrongly punished.
Ms Huq said: “Police handed out extortionate fines. Contrast that with the Met’s reluctance to investigate the partygate scandal in Downing St.”
Ms Butler said: “It is wrong that people had no formal right of appeal.”
Police Minister Kit Malthouse said FPNs had at least two reviews to ensure they met regulations.
