SAS’s new gunship of the desert

-

FOUR SAS members saddle up on their new weapons against Islamic State – a squadron of camels.

The elite forces are riding the “ships of the desert” on long-range reconnaissance missions in Mali.

They have been operating in the region for almost 10 years but missions deep into the desert using specially adapted vehicles have been beset by mechanical issues.

A senior military source said the animals were far more efficient.

“Vehicles need to be maintained and refuelled every few days – the vehicle logistical support is a real hindrance,” they said.

“Camels store fat in their humps and can go for up to 10 days without needing food and water. “

It is understood the idea was hatched after the special forces employed local Bedouin guides who also use the animals.

Some 400 UK troops are in Mali as part of a UN operation to limit the influence of IS in North Africa.
