Islands need UK rule says report
A GROUP of Caribbean islands whose premier has been charged with drug trafficking and money laundering may return to British rule.
Foreign Office minister Amanda Millin has flown to the British Virgin Islands after elected leader Andrew Fahie, 51, was held in Miami on Thursday.
She will meet governor James Rankin – who ordered a report into government corruption in the tax haven in 2021.
It recommends that he takes over for two years – but the islands’ acting
premier has opposed the move. Natalio Wheatley said: “Every country has challenges with governance, including the UK.”
The BVI is a British Overseas Territory but has its own government and elections. The report by a UK judge says its governance is “appallingly bad”.
