“If Everton can perform like that, defend like that and are a team unit like that and just make that crucial right decision in the final third, I can see them surprising a few – and that includes Chelsea.

“A victory against Chelsea may be key. If you can win, suddenly the whole outlook is different.

“The points difference to get yourself out of the relegation zone doesn’t look as great. The gap to the teams ahead isn’t as big and you have winnable games coming up.” Osman says the collective force from the stands at Goodison Park, which was such a help in the victory over Manchester United, needs to be repeated.

And he says becoming impatient won’t help Lampard’s side over the line.

“No one expected the club to be in this position, but that’s where the club is at,” he added. “Evertonian­s are clever enough to know that the team need their support, especially now.

“Frank Lampard continues to be positive and he continues to try and let that positivity seep through the team and that can only be a good thing.

“The fans will be 100 per cent behind the team – and when any club has that, then wonderful things can happen.”
