GREENING GLORY BID

-

BY ROSS HEPPENSTALL JONATHAN GREENING is aiming to cap a dream debut management season tomorrow by guiding hometown club Scarborough Athletic to promotion.

The former Manchester United midfielder (above) was on the bench for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side when they beat Bayern Munich to win the Champions League in 1999.

That famous Treblewinning campaign was Greening’s first season at Old Trafford after joining from York City in 1998.

The 43-year-old took over at the Seadogs last May, and victory at home to Warrington Town in tomorrow’s Northern Premier League Play-off Final would take them into the National League North.

It is the biggest game in the brief history of a club formed in June 2007, following the winding up of Scarborough Football Club.

Greening said: “To beat Warrington and win promotion would be unbelievable for the town.

“There were a few ups and downs earlier in the season, but the chairman and the board stuck by me and have been really supportive.

“I’m really pleased for them that we now have the chance to reach the Conference North because getting there would be an amazing achievement.

“My players have got an unbelievable attitude and, after we had a 16-game unbeaten run, we had a couple of little blips after Christmas. But I told them to keep believing.”
