However, Toon chief Eddie Howe admitted: “There’s been progress.

“We’ve improved a lot of aspects of our play, but it also shows there is a gap to bridge to the top teams.”

Howe added: “The biggest disappointment, for me, is individually. We didn’t excel.

“If we were going to upset this Liverpool team, we needed six or seven performers right on top of their game - and, today, that didn’t happen.”
