Despite winning their last six home matches, Newcastle were on the back foot for the majority of the game.

However, Toon chief Eddie Howe admitted: “There’s been progress.

“We’ve improved a lot of aspects of our play, but it also shows there is a gap to bridge to the top teams.”

Howe added: “The biggest disappoint­ment, for me, is individual­ly. We didn’t excel.

“If we were going to upset this Liverpool team, we needed six or seven performers right on top of their game - and, today, that didn’t happen.”
