Strokes are life-threatenin­g medical emergencie­s where the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. The symptoms can be spotted by rememberin­g the word FAST:

FACE: A person’s face may droop on one side or they may be unable to smile.

ARMS: The person may not be able to lift both arms and keep them up because of weakness in

IMPORTANT one arm.

SPEECH: Their speech may be slurred, or they may be unable to talk.

TIME: If you spot any of these symptoms, call 999 immediatel­y.

Treatment typically involves medication to stop blood clots and lower blood pressure but sometimes surgery is also needed.
