Act FAST to curb stroke symptoms

Strokes are life-threatening medical emergencies where the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. The symptoms can be spotted by remembering the word FAST:

FACE: A person’s face may droop on one side or they may be unable to smile.

ARMS: The person may not be able to lift both arms and keep them up because of weakness in

IMPORTANT one arm.

SPEECH: Their speech may be slurred, or they may be unable to talk.

TIME: If you spot any of these symptoms, call 999 immediately.

Treatment typically involves medication to stop blood clots and lower blood pressure but sometimes surgery is also needed.
