Derby hit by £22m bombshell

- TOM HOPKINSON

MEL MORRIS wants £22million for Pride Park — a figure preferred bidder Chris Kirchner cannot reach and which Derby

City Council believe to be prohibitive.

The council have looked into buying the stadium – which is being sold separately to the club – with a view to renting it to the Rams.

But that £22m price tag could be a deal-breaker with former owner Morris.

Boss Wayne Rooney wants the ownership issue resolved as quickly as possible.

And Derby need to know where they will play in time for the EFL’s annual meeting on June 10.

They could be kicking off life in League One in August playing home matches down the M1 at Leicester or Stoke.

Yesterday, Kirchner tweeted that he and his team had “done everything we can”, but that “the same hurdles remain in place”.

The stalemate gives hope to former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley that he could buy the club.
