Fraud claims make salmon firm flounder
A MAJOR smoked salmon supplier has gone bust following a probe into suspected food fraud.
Bleiker’s Smokehouse used to supply fish to the likes of Sainsbury’s and Tesco as well as independent stores before it went into administration, with the loss of 90 jobs.
The family-owned business, in Northallerton, North Yorks, is now being investigated by the National Food Crime Unit over country of origin claims on some products.
A 56-year-old man from Ripon has been arrested.
Gavan Wafer, head of investigation at the NFCU, said: “It’s vitally important we ensure food is safe and what it says it is.”
