Gers can complete fairy tale

- ROSS HEPPENSTALL

RANGERS have been backed to complete their amazing journey and claim the club’s second

European trophy – by the heroes who lifted their first 50 years ago.

The Ibrox giants’ only previous European success came in May 1972 when they overcame Dynamo Moscow to lift the European Cup Winners’ Cup at the Nou Camp.

Left-back Willie Mathieson, who played in all nine games of the 1971-72 European run, said: “For Rangers to win the Europa League now – 50 years on from our success and in the club’s 150th year – would be a fairy tale.

“Willie Waddell, the manager, said to us, ‘Do it for the fans’, and I’m sure Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have a similar message on Wednesday night because the support will be incredible.”

Derek Johnstone was another key member of the side and said: “It was the greatest feeling in the world, knowing that we were the first team to win a European trophy for Rangers.

“Now this current Rangers team have the chance to join us in the history books. I’d love them to do it.”
