Walkers in white take her home

- BY EMER SCULLY

THOUSANDS of mourners gathered in silence to walk Zara Aleena home a week after her killing.

Crowds commemorated the aspiring lawyer by wearing white and carrying flowers. Dozens of bouquets and cards were left at the spot where Zara, 35, was attacked just 10 minutes from her front door in Ilford, East London.

Zara’s aunt Farah Naz stopped yards from the family’s home and told the crowd: “She was on the home stretch, thank you so much for doing the walk and holding her in your hearts.”

Close pal Aimy Nair, 27, said she knew Zara since she was a little girl. She said single Zara had dreamed of being a mum. “She wanted to get married. She’d tell us don’t mess around, start a family.”

Ilford North Labour MP Wes Streeting has called for a crackdown on wolf whistling and cat-calling to teach men to “show respect”. Between April 2020 and March 2021 a total of 109 women were murdered by men in England and Wales.
