Itchy eyes

Having swollen, puffy or watery eyes around pets may mean you have an allergy.

“Pets carry allergens such as dander, pollen, saliva and even urine. All four can cause reactions in humans,” says optometrist Sujata Paul at Lenstore (lenstore.co.uk).

Try using decongestant eye drops or oral antihistamines too.

“Wash your hands with an antibacterial wash after an encounter with a pet. Keep them out of your bedroom to avoid clothes and bedding becoming contaminated.”

Buy a special shampoo made to reduce allergens released from fur.

“In-between washes, wipe your pets to prevent outside allergens entering your home,” adds Sujata.
