■■After a £1.6million spruce-up, the Royal Marine Hotel in Brora on the east coast of the North Highlands, re-opened last week. There’s a Scandi-Scot feel to the new interiors thanks to local artisans. Each of the 21 rooms features handcrafted beds adorned with bespoke tartan throws.

New dining venues include The Curing Yard restaurant offering a seafood-rich menu and the Megan Boyd bar which serves light bites, Scottish ales and cocktails. The James Braid Lounge is the place to relax with a dram of the local malt whisky.

It overlooks the harbour and beaches, lochs, and glens are on the doorstep. There’s also Brora Golf Club next door. B&B from £249 a night.
