Being in debt can be scary – and the statistics for the UK alone are really quite frightenin­g, too. Here are five facts from The Money Charity, based on figures from

April 2022.


The average credit card debt per household in the UK is £2,192. The average unsecured debt per UK adult in the UK is £3,817.


The average total debt per UK household, including mortgages, is £64,286.


During the previous year, credit card balances gradually crept up by 8.7%.


Brits owe a grand total of £1,786.6billion – £67bn more than in 2021.


In total, UK borrowers pay around £126million a day purely in interest.
