Fitz ‘hitting better’ than US Open win

MATT FITZPATRICK can lead a home-team charge at St Andrews – and he heads into The Open in the best shape of his life.

The US Open champion’s confidence is at an all-time high after his win at Brookline (below). And pundit Nick Dougherty is hearing only good things from the practice range.

He said: “Why wouldn’t it be one of the Brits – Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton, or Rory McIlroy?

“As for Matt Fitzpatrick…his caddie Billy Foster says he’s hitting the ball better than he was at the US Open.

“The impressive thing about Matt is every single part of his game has improved at the same time.

“And that’s before you take into account what’s ‘between his ears’. That’s astounding, to be honest.”
