Aussie collapse sparks fightback
DIMUTH KARUNARATNE and Kusal Mendis led Sri Lanka’s fightback against Australia in the second Test.
The Sri Lanka pair (above) collaborated in a 152-run partnership in reply to Australia’s first-innings 364 on day two.
Karunaratne fell in the final session on 86, but Mendis was unbeaten on 84 with Sri Lanka on 184-2, still 180 behind.
It was an impressive response from the hosts, having earlier seen the bottom half of Australia’s batting order cave in.
The Aussies lost their last five wickets for 66 runs, with Steve Smith running out of partners and remained unbeaten on 145.
Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya claimed 6-118 for a memorable debut Test.
Australia are 1-0 ahead in the two-Test series and Smith, who ended his 18-month century drought, said: “We got the liberty of not having to bat last. I think the game’s in a decent spot.”
