Women pension pain until 2040
WOMEN’S pension payments will not catch up with men’s for another 18 years, a Government minister has admitted.
Work and Pensions Minister Deborah Stedman-Scott was criticised by campaigners after she revealed equality will not happen before 2040.
Millions of women receive less due to gaps in contributions caused by pregnancies and child care, as well as the impact of poorer pay.
Under pressure to say when the gap would be closed, Baroness Stedman
Scott told peers: “We honestly believe that by 2040 it will be equal.”
But Jan Shortt, head of the National Pensioners Convention, said: “That’s just ridiculous – many will not benefit from anything by then because they will no longer be with us. We demand better for women and we demand it now.”
