‘A huge step’ in handling heartbreak
BARONESS Finlay has championed Charlie’s Law in the House of Lords and hails the upcoming review into the treatment of sick kids.
The former president of the British Medical Association said: “The Government’s review into disputes relating to the treatment of critically ill children is a huge step in the right direction.”
Other supporters in parliament include Labour MPs Bambos Charalambous and Emma Hardy.
Mr Charalambous said: “Charlie’s Law has played a significant role in getting the Government to review the causes of disputes relating to critically ill children.
“The Government really cannot waste this opportunity and must now work with parents and clinicians to improve standards of palliative care and prevent cases from escalating to courts.”
The Gards’ situation is among a series of heartbreaking cases. Another involved Alfie Evans, who had a neurodegenerative disorder and was treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
Dad Thom Evans and mum Kate James wanted to take him to Rome for treatment but lost a legal battle. Alfie died in 2018, aged 23 months.
