WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT... helping my baby cope with the heat

-

As the weather warms up, it’s important to keep little ones cool.

“Babies should always be kept out of direct sunlight – I don’t put suncream on their delicate skin until they are at least four months old,” says Louenna Hood, maternity nurse and Norland nanny for Nelsons Teetha (teetha.com). “Offer your baby a slightly cooler bath of 36C in the evening before their bedtime feed. If they are hot and bothered during the day, you could also pop them in the bath before their afternoon nap.”

Hydration is key. “You may find your baby sleeps more in the heat. Remember to wake them for regular feeds throughout the day to stop them from becoming dehydrated,” adds Louenna.

“For newborns, just their usual breast or formula milk will be enough. For those over five months old, offer cooled boiled water in a bottle.

“If your baby has fed well during the day and has regular wet nappies, you don’t need to wake them any more than usual during the night.”
