RONNIE FLAK IS WRONG

- Interview: STEVE BATES

I’M a massive fan of Cristiano Ronaldo and all that he’s achieved.

But he’s in the line of fire at Manchester United right now and I find that unfair.

When he came back to Old Trafford, he clearly thought that, after finishing second the previous season, United might kick on and have a good campaign, with Cristiano (above) bringing goals to the team.

He did and was top scorer with 24 goals, delivering his part of the bargain.

The fact that it unravelled so fast at United is no fault of his – even if some were quick to point the finger.

We got the narrative that he doesn’t press, he won’t run back, he’s upset the apple cart.

But Ronaldo was never going to press and harry defenders, it’s not his game and certainly not at 37.

He did what he was signed to do – score goals. He was let down by those around him and I wouldn’t have a go if he wants to go and play Champions League football.

You can’t blame him for not being thrilled to be in the Europa League. That’s not what he signed up for.

There aren’t many clubs who can afford him, so he’ll have to take a huge pay cut, but if he accepts that, good luck to him.

I’ve heard his loyalty questioned. None of us knows what went on behind the scenes at

United, but from the outside it looked like a shambles.

However, United’s failure last season was no fault of Ronaldo’s.

Loyalty is a two-way street and it annoys me when it’s always the player that gets it in the neck in these situations.

Ronaldo deserves better than that from United.
