SAINTS EYE BRAND NEW DEFENDER

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

SOUTHAMPTON are considering making a move for Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams.

The 21-year-old (left) has been told he can leave Old Trafford this summer, following Erik ten Hag’s arrival at United.

And Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is weighing up a bid to take him, on the back of Williams’ loan spell at

Norwich last season. Despite the Canaries’ relegation, Williams impressed during his stay at Carrow Road and the versatility he showed there is a big selling point.

United want around £10million for the player, who operates primarily at left-back, but can do the job as a wing-back or full-back on either side of the pitch.

Williams came through the ranks at Old Trafford, rising to prominence in the 2019-20 campaign.

But his path was blocked by Luke Shaw and Alex Telles and, even before Holland left-back Tyrell Malacia was added to the United squad this month, Williams was told he was surplus to requirements.

That opened the door for Saints, who must now decide whether to take their initial interest further.
