Britain set for ‘roller coaster’ of weather

- BY PHIL CARDY

TEMPERATURES are set to dip this week before hitting 30C next weekend.

The Met Office said after a warm weekend things will turn cooler then start to rise again – although they will be nowhere near the record

40C seen last week.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin added: “After some warmth at the weekend it is likely to turn cooler and fresher again next week, so something of a roller coaster ride.

“There are suggestions temperatures could pick up to above average towards the back end of next week.”

Southern and eastern areas could see highs of 30C today. Scotland, Wales and the north will be milder, with temperatures between the mid-teens and low 20s.

WILDFIRES

Tomorrow the maximum in the south and the east will be back in the mid-20s with the rest of the country between 15 and 20.

Meanwhile, wildfires continued to burn across Europe following the long heatwave.

Residents and tourists were evacuated as a one outbreak spread from mountain forests to homes in the beach resort of Vatera on the Greek isle of Lesbos.

Thick billowing smoke was fanned by strong winds and one fleeing resident told state TV that her home was on fire.

“We are battling to save homes,” said a local mayor in western Lesbos.

Firefighters have also tackled blazes in other areas of Greece along with Spain and Italy in the past few days.
