Emergency declared on monkeypox

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

MONKEYPOX has been declared a global health emergency as cases rise.

World Health Organisation chief Dr Tedros Adhanom says there are 16,000 cases in 74 nations, with the risk of catching it highest in Europe.

The UK has 2,208 cases, five times more than last month, with 98% among gay or bisexual men.

The disease is spread by close personal contact and the symptoms are mainly flu-like plus skin lesions.

So far the only reported deaths have been in Africa, where it has been endemic for some years.

Dr Tedros said: “We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly through new modes of transmission about which we understand too little.”
