NIALL FARRELL endured a stop-start three-year mystery surrounding a hand injury – but now he’s ready to take a grip on these Games in his hometown.

Birmingham flyweight Farrell, 24, said: “Originally, I hurt it sparring when I was 16. Not a big deal. But when I won bronze at the youth European Championships it got way worse.

“I had scans. Nothing. Steroid injection. Nothing. I was in so much pain I couldn’t move my finger. It was locked – pointing out, straight.

“In the end, they had to open it up. I’d split every tendon to the bone. But 10 months on I needed another operation and it worked, thankfully. My time is now.”
