TONS OF RUNS FOR BIG SAM
GLAMORGAN’S Sam Northeast hit an astonishing unbeaten 410 as records tumbled in their amazing County Championship win against Leicestershire yesterday.
Northeast made the thirdhighest score in Championship history - the best of the 21st century. Only Brian Lara (501 not out) for Warwickshire in 1994 and Archie MacLaren, who hit 424 for Lancashire against Somerset in 1895, have higher Championship scores.
Graeme Hick is the only other player who has made a quadruple century in the Championship – an unbeaten 405 for Worcestershire against Somerset in 1988.
Northeast reached his quadruple century before lunch on day four at Grace Road as Glamorgan racked up 795-5 - the team’s highest in their 101-year history.
The 32-year-old’s innings also took him beyond Steve James’ previous best for Glamorgan, 309 not out.
And his mammoth stand of 461 with Chris Cooke, unbeaten on 191, was also the biggest for Glamorgan, who amid an avalanche of records, forced a vital win in their bid for promotion from Division Two by an innings and 28 runs.
Head coach Matt Maynard said: “It was an amazing effort with the bat and to get 10 wickets from lunchtime onwards is awesome.
“An incredible day as a team and a remarkable achievement from Sam.”
