The Midland Hotel Morecambe, Lancs

-

WHERE AND WHY

The Midland has been a focal point of the Morecambe promenade since 1933.

The Art Deco hotel was refurbished in 2008 and hosts events and weddings.

Our second-floor room was spacious and equipped with a fridge loaded with milk and water and stylish pull-out Scandinavian-style drawers full of tea, coffee and biscuits.

There was a fine vista over beautiful Morecambe Bay and when we opened the windows we could hear the sound of waves.

ON THE MENU

Guests can enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner in the Sun Terrace, and there is a long bar, taking in the magnificent views across the bay with the Lake District peaks and Isle of Walney in the distance.

On offer is contemporary cuisine in a relaxed environment.

There is also the adjoining Rotunda bar which opens out on to a terrace – perfect for when the weather is fine. There you will find everything from seasonal cocktails to specialist G&Ts, coffees, fish and chips and nibbles to go with a beer.

The menu ranges from light bites up to mains, including a chargrilled 8oz sirloin steak (£26), Midland burger (£13), and Fish of the Day – stone bass for us (£18).

There are also ample vegetarian and vegan options, such as a spicy bean burger (£10.50) and the quinoa and tomato salad with candied pecan nuts (£11).

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

There are many wonderful attractions in Lancashire to make a stay at this hotel exciting and worthwhile. These include a view of the Crook O’ Lune horseshoe bend of the River Lune, made famous by JMW Turner, and the Trough of Bowland with its rolling hills.

The historic city of Lancaster, with its splendid stone facades harking back to its heyday as a Georgian port, and its Maritime Museum, are on the doorstep and there are many independent shops to explore.

Morecambe’s promenade and seafront play host to a variety of artwork included in the TERN Project, from a statue of local lad Eric Morecambe to a flock of words – a 1,000ft typographic pavement connecting the new railway station with the water.
