SARINA SIDE SO SPECIAL

- Interview: Simon Mullock

THERE was more than a touch of romance about England bringing home the Euros.

Despite the complaints from Germany, it was clear that Sarina Wiegman’s women were the best team and deserved their victory in the final.

But what I loved was – how can I put it? – the pure sh**housery.

The outstanding level of game management shown by the Lionesses to become European champions was something to behold.

When Chloe Kelly fired England 2-1 ahead with still 10 minutes of extra-time remaining, the expectation was that Germany would come storming back.

As it transpired, they didn’t lay a glove on our side.

How many times have we seen an opposition team use their experience and knowledge to grind out a victory over England after getting their noses in front?

This time, it was the Lionesses playing the smart game.

Most of those final minutes were played out by the corner flag at the German end, with a team of serial winners left powerless.

Football isn’t all about technique, it’s about mental fortitude at the toughest moments.

England responded to Germany’s equaliser by dusting themselves down and regaining control of the game.

Then, after nudging ahead again, they made sure they held Germany at arm’s length.

It was the hallmark of a very special team.

I have been a big supporter of women’s football, watching Liverpool’s team develop.

The improvement in skills has been clear, but, if there is anyone out there who thinks females still can’t grasp the tactical nuances, I would advise them to watch how England won the Euros.
