Sunday Mirror

A moral duty

- Madeuthink@mirror.co.uk

Sanitary products are not optional extras, they are essentials. And no one should go without because they can’t afford them.

Socks, tea towels or newspapers are not alternatives, but an abomination in 21st century Britain. Yet that is what some women and young girls resort to using.

It’s why the Sunday Mirror’s End Period Poverty campaign is one we must win. If Scotland can provide free pads and tampons to those in need, then so can England and Wales.

No girl should stay off school, or miss PE, because she is anxious about her period. No nurse or police officer should need charity handouts. And no one should have to choose between protection and eating.

As Spice Girl Mel B tells us, this is about dignity, independence and freedom.

Which are basic human rights.
