Steel yourself! 1.6 ton blast is one of biggest

- BY KAREN ROCKETT

A BUILDING at a former steelworks was demolished using 1.6 tons of explosives yesterday in one of the biggest such operations in the UK in 75 years.

The three blasts over seven seconds at the old Redcar plant in North Yorkshire could be heard up to eight miles away.

The demolition created 60,000 tons of debris.

The 213ft-tall building was where molten iron from the site’s blast furnace was refined until the steelworks closed in 2015.

It is now being regenerated to create the Teesworks industrial zone.

The demolition was part of a £25million project carried out over the past 12 months to pull down a series of large industrial shed buildings and seven tall chimney stacks.
